Competitions:  Regattas are typically 2000 meters which are long enough to be considered distance yet short enough to require sprinting strategy.  Races usually last between 5-8 minutes.  The major regattas that US athletes are involved in revolve around collegiate rowing, world championships and the Olympics.  In the fall Boston hosts what is now the World’s largest 2-day regatta (with upwards of 300,000 spectators) since 1965 – The Head of the Charles.  The 2011 NCAA National Championships were held at the end of May in Gold River, CA.  The 2011 World Rowing Championships will take place in Bled, Slovenia from August 28th- September 4th.  And of course the Olympics will be next year in London.

Another style of racing can take place anytime of year and that is called the C.R.A.S.H.-B Sprints and involves rowers competing against each other indoors on a Concept 2 Rowing machine.

US Results:

The US has fielded incredibly competitive teams in recent history including a gold for the Women’s Eight as well as bronze for the Men’s Eight at the 2008 Olympics.  The US Olympic Rowing Trials will be held at the end of June 2012 at the Caspersen training center which happens to be the home course of Princeton.
